Hi all

Do you know what the expression 'cherry picking' means?

The context? I am afraid there is not much... I just overheard someone
using this expression in a phrase like 'I want to see if they cherry
pick them...'

By the way the people who used this expression were British, but all
contributions will be welcome!

Thanks
Luis

A cherry picker is a contraption used by utility workers when they
need to access overhead power or telephone lines. It's a hydraulic
lift or crane attached to a truck with a basket at the other end into
which the workers operate from. It lifts them into the air and allows
the workers to place themselves at the exact spot most convenient for
doing what they need to do. It takes the place of ladders and is
probably quicker and more convenient.

Hi Luis,

My dictionary says:

cherry-pick is a transitive verb that means: to choose the best people
or things from a group and leave those which are not so good.

I hope it helps.

Cheers,

My dear Jack,
It seems that new words creep into English everyday!
Do not feel bad(ly). [This is an example of English evolution!]
The noun, "cherry picker" and the verb, "to cherry pick" are two
very different concepts, and among us all, I think that we have
explained both terms well.

Yes, that's exactly what it is. A company may wish to make sales of their product by sending a catalog to potential new customers through the mail. But they wish to send the catalog to only people who live in certain parts of a city where people have a high income. They are "Cherry-picking" for the easiest and most likely person to buy their product.
The term "Cherry-picker" comes from that machine (Crane) that raises a man above the tree to pick the cherries. It is very easy to get the cherries this way from the outside, but the cherries that are inside the tree are not worth the time and money to pick, so they are left there for others.

Hi all
Do you know what the expression 'cherry picking' means?
Luis
In the context of collecting coins, to "cherry pick" means to select
the most desirable coins and to obtain them for an inexpensive price.
When reading coin advertisements for bulk coins, I have long seen the
term "NOT cherry picked!" That would mean that a large group of coins
has not been examined by an expert. I have never believed the truth
of this claim.
In general, to "cherry pick" is to select only the best items and to
ignore the rest of the items.
That is my knowledge of the term.
Also, the expression "It is cherry!" is used to describe an older,
desirable car which has received unusually good care. We have, in
English, the expression, "It was owned by a little old lady who only
used it to drive to church on Sunday." It has been replaced by the
expression, "It is cherry!"
I did NOT read the other responses before posting this. I wanted to
give my "gut level response" to your question.
Matthew
